{"id":2676,"date":"2013-09-28T01:30:13","date_gmt":"2013-09-28T01:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?p=2676"},"modified":"2014-01-26T19:30:36","modified_gmt":"2014-01-26T19:30:36","slug":"september-22nd-26th-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?p=2676","title":{"rendered":"September 22nd \u2013 26th, 2013, Crater Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not all fun and games being hosts.\u00a0 Last night the Wedding got a bit out of hand and the antifreeze kicked the noise and testosterone up a notch.\u00a0 When John returned from reminding them it was time to skedaddle for a second time, things didn\u2019t go well and my pointer finger was poised over the phone to call 911.\u00a0 Don\u2019t really know what good it would have done as it was late and the sheriff won\u2019t come unless your life is in danger.<\/p>\n<p>We have learned that as hosts, it is better to set the rules down and stand firm.\u00a0 Next morning, send in a report that hits them in the pocket book and takes away their deposit.\u00a0 Justice prevails\u2026although we still end up cleaning the nasty mess before the next group arrives.<\/p>\n<p>A quick escape to Roseburg this morning for more asthma meds at Roseburg\u2019s Wal-Martian store, a birthday burger at Red Robin\u2026Yummmm.\u2026and back to Millpond.\u00a0\u00a0 A new group of 200 making up Team Roseburg Wrestlers and their families, hosting a fundraiser, selling burgers and holding a silent auction.\u00a0 Our short escape caused us to miss the silent auction, darn!\u00a0 Baskets of great \u201cstuff\u201d lined the picnic tables and I\u2019m sure I could have found room in our rolling box for one small basket.<\/p>\n<p>A work free, albeit chilly, day today.\u00a0 Nary a camper or day use taker for Millpond so Crater Lake calls and we shall answer.\u00a0 Up and over my roller coaster road to Hwy\u00a0138 and off to explore.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2709\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2709\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"My roller coaster\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/My-roller-coaster-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cozy Steamboat Inn was our choice for breakfast to begin our day.\u00a0 Warm and inviting dining area, the veggie omelet with Grandma\u2019s Bread and fresh blackberry preserves was to-die-for confirming that this place will be a regular for us next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2707\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2707\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Steamboat Inn\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Steamboat-Inn-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2705\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2705\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"River outside Steamboat sunroom window\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/River-outside-Steamboat-sunroom-window-99x150.jpg\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2706\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2706\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sun room at Steamboat Inn\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Sun-room-at-Steamboat-Inn-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a long pause in our drive to let workers clear a large rock avalanche off the road, we continued through the fog, stopping at Diamond Lake to stretch our legs. \u00a0Next year and better weather conditions will lure us back again but for now, we continued on to Crater Lake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2704\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2704\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Diamond Lake from shore\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Diamond-Lake-from-shore-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2684\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2684\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Diamond Lake\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Diamond-Lake-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The drive to Crater Lake takes about two hours and, this being Oregon,\u00a0 incredible views of the North Umpqua River with breathtaking scenic backdrops are a given.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2708\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2708\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Umpqua River\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Umpqua-River-99x150.jpg\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crater Lake is the remains of the erupted Mt. Mazama , was formed around 5,677 BC, is the deepest cleanest lake in the US and is surrounded by cliffs almost two thousand feet high.\u00a0 After we drove through the North Entrance it would be another 20 miles before we reached the crater\u2019s rim.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2685\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2685\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Crater Lake North Entrance\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Crater-Lake-North-Entrance-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the outskirts of the crater is Pumice Desert and the fog and clouds played light games with the toast colored expansive pumice dust nearly 100 feet deep, destroying all vegetation.\u00a0 Beautiful but desolate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2703\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2703\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pumice Desert\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Pumice-Desert-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2702\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2702\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Info\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Info-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first gaze at the Lake was brrrrreath taking\u2026but the icy cold winds didn\u2019t stop our hike up to the top for a best vantage point view.\u00a0 At its highest point, the elevation is 7317.51 and the vision spreading out before you is incredible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2698\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2698\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Highest point\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Highest-point-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Our-first-view-of-the-Lake-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in the car with the heater on, we started along Rim Drive but within seconds, fog crept up the side of the rim and covered the road dropping visibility to a few feet.\u00a0 Slowing to a crawl we stopped at the next pull-out and the fog drifted past us and evaporated as fast as it had appeared.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2687\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2687\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"On the rim, src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Pull-out-along-the-rim-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tiny critters scampered up on the rock walls begging for food from anyone that came near.\u00a0 Don\u2019t know how my little visitor could have fit anything more into its puffy cheeks but it insisted on staying close by until I returned to the car.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2695\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2695\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stuffed and begging\" exit from the car, until we turned towards the Lodge for something to warm and relax us before the return journey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2700\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2700\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Around another bend\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Around-another-bend-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crater Lake Lodge opened in 1915 but is lacking in ostentatious anything.\u00a0 There is not a grand entrance or any interesting sides on the building\u2019s outside.\u00a0 In front of the Lodge were some peculiar trees.\u00a0 No one at the Lodge, not even the Ranger, could tell us why they\u00a0had that odd look.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2688\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2688\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Crater Lake Lodge\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Crater-Lake-Lodge-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2693\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2693\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Strange trees\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Strange-trees-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most grandiose it offers is a large stone fireplace in the Great Hall but the smaller fireplace in the lobby was far more detailed and had an intimacy and d\u00e9cor that warmed you immediately.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2689\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2689\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Small fireplace inside the Lodge\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Small-fireplace-inside-the-Lodge-99x150.jpg\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The outside porch of the lodge had a long row of rockers that overlooked Wizard Island in Crater Lake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2692\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2692\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Wizard-Island-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2690\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2690\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lake from the Lodge\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Lake-from-the-Lodge-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Down to the Mazama Village Campground area to check out the competition, none of it being as appealing as our BLM campground, then gassing up the tank for the ride home.<\/p>\n<p>Just past the Pumice Desert, towards the edge of the park, was a\u00a0large grove of Knotty Pine.\u00a0 Had I a house, I would love a huge covered\u00a0wrap around porch with railings and\u00a0posts of Knotty Pine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2686\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2686\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Knotty Pines\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Knotty-Pines-99x150.jpg\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One required stop on the way back down the cliffs. \u00a0John promised we could stop at one of the dozens of waterfalls off Hwy 138, known as the Waterfall Highway.\u00a0 I chose Whitehorse Falls with its wooden bridge and viewing platform jutting out over the North Umpqua River. \u00a0\u00a0The area was cool and shadowy.\u00a0 Walking through the woods, autopilot statement for safety in the wilds is\u2026 \u201dHey bears, I\u2019m not food.\u201d\u00a0 The roar of the falls drowned out humans hearing my every 15 second calls.\u00a0 Happily it must have been loud enough for the notice of close by bears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2683\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2683\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Whitehorse Falls\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Whitehorse-Falls-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back at Millpond the leaves on the trees have begun to change colors.\u00a0 Fall has arrived, bats have left for their local hibernation caves, hummingbirds are searching out alternative provisions, mice continue to fall into our traps but our local raptors are scarce.\u00a0 It has rained every day this week and no campers have visited for over a week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2681\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2681\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Color changes starting\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Color-changes-starting-99x150.jpg\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2682\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2682\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"My favorite mossy green tree\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/My-favorite-mossy-green-tree-99x150.jpg\" width=\"99\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Said good-by to all my seniors and Kitchen People at the Community Center while volunteering at the senior lunch, this being my last Thursday.\u00a0 The Kitchen People are made up of me, Betty, Barb, Jackie, Steve and our fearless leader Helen with all but Helen being volunteers.\u00a0 It was a fun experience, one that I shall resume next season.\u00a0 Came home with a great assortment of fresh home grown veggies that none will bother to take home and cook but me.\u00a0 How lucky am I that every Thursday I score delicious home grown veggies without any of the work necessary to raise them!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/?attachment_id=2679\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2679\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Glide Community Center\" src=\"http:\/\/perrellas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/My-Home-Grown-Veggie-Haul-150x99.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One final cleaning of everything Millpond.\u00a0 All paths blown off, flush bathrooms cleaned top to bottom, vault toilets cleaned top to bottom, pavilion and tables blown out and washed down, all trash cans emptied.\u00a0 It was cold and wet but we worked until dark and frozen before pulling in our slides and warming up inside.\u00a0 Dinner, then sleep.\u00a0 In the morning we are On The Road
